How to use Spellbinders & Letterpress dies in the Sizzix Big Shot & Cuttlebug Machines

Using Spellbinder dies in your standard Sizzix big shot or Vagabond Machine:
Cutting Sandwich: (stacking from bottom up)

  1. Sizzix Essential Platform with the Sizzix Wafer Thin Adapter (655807) on top OR the Multi or Solo Platform with all tabs closed.
  2. Place the Spellbinders Die with ridges facing upward.
  3. Place your paper or cardstock on top.
  4. Add 2 x Sizzix Acrylic Mats (655093) on top.
  5. Run through your Standard Sizzix Big Shot or Vagabond Machine to cut our your shape.

Now the Embossing Sandwich (still using the same die):

  1. Sizzix Essential Platform with the Sizzix Wafer Thin Adapter (655807) on top OR the Multi or Solo Platform with all tabs closed.
  2. Spellbinders die facing up, with die cut still inside (you can use a post it to keep the paper in place)
  3. Place on top 1 x Sizzix Texture Impressions pad (655120))+ 1 x Sizzix Silicone Pad (655121) or 2x Spellbinders Polymer Tan Embossing Mats
  4. Place 1 x handmade shim (1 piece of 12”×6″ cardstock tri-folded) on top. If using the first option of step 3 leave out the shim.
  5. Add ONLY 1 x Sizzix Acrylic Pad (655093) on top
  6. Run Through your Big Shot or Vagabond machine for a crisp embossing.

Using Spellbinder Impressibilities in the standard Big Shot or Vagabond Machine:

Spellbinder Impressabilities are single layer metal templates for embossing, debossing, letterpress or stenciling.
Template can also be cut apart to use individual designs, then pieced back together with magnetic mat. They can get bent after repeated use to you need to be careful in handling them.

  1. Multipurpose/ Solo platform open on tab 1 or the Essential platform with 1x Sizzix Wafer Thin Adaptor (657160) on top.
  2. Shim – sheet of thin foam or half fold card stock (if your paper is not 300g or more)
  3. 1 x Clear Acrylic Cutting Pad on top (656253)
  4. Spellbinder Impressibilities Letterpress Plate with – your choice of ink on. (you can also just do embossing without the ink) -Versa color inkpad’s or even acrylic paint works nice, on paper, card, felt or foam (whatever you wish really!!)
  5. Your desired cardstock/paper that has been spritzed with water on both sides – this helps give a deeper impression
  6. Then place 1 x Spellbinders polymer tan embossing mat on top
  7. 1 x Clear Acrylic Cutting Pad on top (656253) – run through your machine

(Tip: You can de- or emboss by flipping the cardstock & impressibilities template around, core-dinations cardstock also work very nice for another look, if you let the paper dry completely and the sand over the pattern with a sander or sanding paper)

Using Spellbinder M-Bossablities in the standard big shot or vagabond:

  1. Big Shot Multipurpose Platform with all tabs closed or the essential platform with 1 x Sizzix Wafer Thin Adaptor (657160) on top.
  2. Place Spellbinders M-Bossabilities Folder with your paper/card inside, on top of the sandwich.
  3. Add 1 x Big Shot Acrylic Cutting Plate.
  4. Feed through the Big Shot Machine.

Using Cottage Cuts dies in the Standard Big Shot or Vagabond

  1. Place Sizzix Essential Platform or Sizzix Multi-Platform with all tabs closed.
  2. Place Cottage Cutz die on top of platform
  3. Place paper or cardstock on top.
  4. Place 2x Sizzix Acrylic Pads (655093) on top

Using Sizzix Letterpress (Ink It’s) in the Standard Big Shot or Vagabond:

Letterpress: (stacking from the bottom up)

  1. Multi-purpose/ Solo platform open on tab 1 or the Essential platform with 1x Sizzix Wafer Thin Adaptor (657160) on top.
  2. Ink-its Letterpress Plate with – your choice of ink on. (Versa color inkpad’s or even acrylic paint works nice)card or felt or foam (whatever you wish really!!)
  3. Sheet of thin foam (if your paper is not 300g or more)
  4. Clear Acrylic Cutting Pad on top(656253)

TIP: for the letterpress: Use pigment ink (like versa color) layered over a clear watermark ink when inking your die, and use medium weight (or heavier) watercolor paper – 300gsm or more – for best results a cotton rich paper. Craft metal can also be impressed, but using shiny, non-porous materials with ink is not recommended because the ink will not dry. If using regular card stock and not getting the impression you desire, place a thin piece of craft foam between the Cutting Pad and your paper. Water and a paper towel will remove most inks. For tougher cases, we recommend stamp cleaner for cleaning your Ink-its Letterpress Plates. If using regular cardstock and not getting the impression you desire, place a thin piece of craft foam between the Cutting Pad and your paper.

Using The Sizziz Framelits In The Vagabond or standard big shot:

  1. From the bottom up stack,
  2. The Sizzix Essential Platform with the Sizzix Wafer Thin Adapter (655807) on top OR the Multi or Solo Platform with all tabs closed.
  3. Add 1 x Sizzix Acrylic Mats (655093).
  4. Place the Sizzix Framelits die ruffle / foam side facing upward on top.
  5. Place your paper or cardstock on top.
  6. Add another 1 x Sizzix Acrylic Mats (655093) on top.
  7. Run through your Standard Sizzix or Vagabond machine
  8. If the cut is not clean it is normal, just add 1 x half folded sheet of cardstock (shim) under the sizzix die for added pressure before rolling it through.

Using other Sizzix Dies like Sizzix Movers & Shapers Die’s, Sizzix Bigz Die’s, Sizzix Sizzlits Die’s,  Sizzix Texture Impressions is according to the Sizzix manual or on the instructions sheet stuck on the sizzix platforms.

Using Spellbinders In Provo Craft Cuttlebug Machine:

Cutting Sandwich: (Stacking from bottom up)

  1. Place Cuttlebug A plate on the bottom
  2. Place Cuttlebug C plate on top of the A plate.
  3. Place Spellbinders die (with ridges facing up) on top.
  4. Add your paper or cardstock on the Spellbinders die
  5. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B plate on top
  6. Run through your Cuttlebug Machine and cut our your die shape.

Now Embossing Sandwich: (Using the same die)

  1. Place Cuttlebug A plate on the bottom
  2. Place the Spellbinders Die facing up (with the die cut paper still inside the die)
  3. Place 1 x Spellbinders Embossing Polymer (Tan) mat on top.
  4. Place 1 x handmade shim (1 piece of 12”×6″ cardstock tri-folded) on top.
  5. Place 2 x Cuttlebug B Plates on top of the shim
  6. Run through your Cuttlebug machine for a crisp embossing.

Doing Letterpress with Spellbinders Impressibilities in the Cuttlebug:

  1. Apply ink to your Spellbinders Impressibilities template with the help of a brayer or by pressing the ink pad directly onto the template.
  2. Place Cuttlebug A plate on the bottom.
  3. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B plate on top.
  4. Place 1 x Spellbinders Polymer (tan) embossing mat on top.
  5. Add your cardstock or paper on the Embossing mat.
  6. Now add your Spellbinders Impressibilities template with ink side facing down.
  7. Place 1 x handmade shim (1 piece of 12”×6″ cardstock tri-folded) on top.
  8. 1 x Cuttlebug B Plate on top.
  9. Run through your Cuttlebug.

For even more color, clean the template and replace over the embossed image. Use the Impressabilities template as a stencil. Dab a sponge in ink and apply the ink through the template and onto the cardstock.

Using Sizzix Bigz Die’s in the Cuttlebug:

  1. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B Plate on the bottom (no A plate)
  2. Place Sizzix Bigz die on top.
  3. Add your paper or cardstock.
  4. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B Plate on the top
  5. Run through your Cuttlebug.

Using Sizzix Letterpress (Ink It’s) in your Cuttlebug

  1. Place Cuttlebug C plate on the bottom.
  2. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B plate on top.
  3. Place 1 x Sizzix Texture Impressions Pad (655120) on top.
  4. Ink the Sizzix Letterpress die by using pigment ink layered over clear watermark ink and medium weight (or heavier) watercolor paper – 100 lbs or more – for best results on top of the Letterpress plate.
  5. Place it on top of the Impressions Pad with Ink side facing up and your paper on top.
  6. Add 1 x Sizzix Silicone Rubber pad (655121) on top.
  7. Add 1 x Cuttlebug B plate on top.
  8. Run through the Cuttlebug machine to get your letterpress.

Note: You can use Sizzix Embossing Folders & Texture Impressions in the Cuttlebug as well. Use the same sandwich you would use with all other Cuttlebug embossing folders.

Or Sizzix Sizzlit die’s it has the same sandwich as you would use with the Cuttlebug die’s.

Using Cottage Cuts Die’s in the Cuttlebug:

  1. Place Cuttlebug A plate on the platform
  2. Place 1 x Cuttlebug C plate on top
  3. Place Cottage Cutz die on top of platform
  4. Place paper or cardstock on top.
  5. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B plate on top
  6. Run through Cuttlebug to die cut.

Using the Sizzix Framelits in the Cuttlebug:

Cutting Sandwich: (stacking from the bottom up)

  1. Place Cuttlebug A plate on the bottom
  2. Place Cuttlebug C plate on top of the A plate.
  3. Place Sizzix Framelits die (with ridges/foam facing up) on top.
  4. Add your paper or cardstock on the die
  5. Place 1 x Cuttlebug B plate on top
  6. Run through your Cuttlebug Machine and cut


Using Spellbinder dies in the sizzix big shot pro machine:

Cutting Sandwich: (stacking from bottom up)

  1. Place the Sizzix Tray (656254) on the Big Shot Pro machine (comes with the machine)
  2. Place Sizzix Big Shot Pro Adapter Pad (656251) on top (also comes with machine)
  3. Add 2 x Sizzix Shimms (656495) comes with machine.
  4. Place on top next to each other, 2 x Provo Craft Cuttlebug A Extended Spacer Plates (Code: 2000202)
  5. Add 2 x Sizzix Wafer Thin Adapters (656253) next to each other
  6. Place on top 1 x Sizzix Acrylic Cutting Pad (656253) included with machine
  7. Spellbinders Calibur die with rough edges showing upward
  8. Paper or Cardstock
  9. Last another Sizzix Acrylic Cutting Pad (656253) included with machine.
  10. Roll through machine & cut out the die cut

Now the Embossing Sandwich (still using the same die):

  1. Take out the 2 x Sizzix Wafer Thin Adaptors (657160)
  2. Place the Sizzix Tray (656254) on the Big Shot Pro machine (comes with the machine)
  3. Add 2 x Sizzix Shimms (656495) comes with machine.
  4. Place on top next to each other, 2 x Provocraft Cuttlebug A Extended Spacer Plates (Code: 2000202)
  5. Place on top 1 x Sizzix Acrylic Cutting Pad (656253) included with machine
  6. Spellbinders Calibur die facing up, with die cut still inside (you can use a post it to keep the paper in place)
  7. Place 2 x Spellbinders Polymer Pads 12” x 12” (W005) on top OR alternatively 2 x Sizzix Texturz Silicone Rubber mats (655121) next to each other and 2 x Sizzix Texture Impressions pad (655120) next to each other.
  8. 1x Sizzix Acrylic cutting pad (656253) included with machine.
  9. Run through your Big Shot Pro machine and get a crisp Embossing.

Using Spellbinder M-Bossabilities in the Big shot pro:

  1. Sizzix Sliding Tray
  2. Sizzix Adapter Pad
  3. Sizzix Acrylic Cutting Pad and Sizzix Premium Crease Pad.
  4. Place the Spellbinders M-Bossabilities folder, with your paper/card inside of it, on top of the Sizzix Crease Pad.
  5. Next layer the Spellbinders Tan Embossing Pad
  6. Spellbinders A-Base Plate
  7. Spellbinders C-Cut Plate.
  8. Feed through the Sizzix Big Shot Pro machine.

If you do not know how to use a die please ask do not put to many or strange plates or materials through your machine as this can result in your die cut machine or die breaking.

Caution, die-cut machines can be dangerous make sure not to run your hand or finger through the machine. Keep away from children or use with supervision.
